President Donald Trump plans to impose tariffs of “approximately 100%” on the import of semiconductors, he said on Wednesday during an informative session at the White House.

Trump did not provide details about when the rates would come into force or when the White House would release official documentation and orientation.

The Trump administration is currently conducting section 232 on semiconductors imports to evaluate its impact on national security and national supply chain. Similar probes have provoked specific taxes in the sector for steel, aluminum and copper.

On Tuesday, Trump said he would announce duties about semiconductors and pharmaceuticals “the following week.” He said that pharmaceutical imports, which are also in the review of Section 232, would face the rates up to 250%.

The White House has several research in Section 232 underway, included in critical minerals, commercial aircraft and jet engines and trucks and medium and heavy service pieces.

Wednesday’s announcement took place during a presentation at the Oval Office where Apple CEO, Tim Cook, said that the electronics giant would increase its investment in North -American Manufacture by $ 100 billion over the next four years. In February, the company said it would invest $ 500 million.

Meanwhile, in recent months, Taiwan Semiconductors Company and the Giant Computer Science Manufacturers have presented plans to invest thousands of dollars in the United States.
