Volvo Construction Equipment presented its first trucks of all electric articulated balls, electrified versions of its A30 and A40 trucks, at the Bauma Equipment Exhibition in Munich, Germany, April 8.

Case construction equipment and MoOG electrification supplier also presented new electrical equipment news at the conference.

The articulated transport truck A30 Electric was revealed at the Volvo April 8 press conference, the first electric truck to size. It will be available along with a larger A40 electric transport truck for customers of some European markets in 2026. The A30 has a size of the construction, mining and quarry and customers, and Volvo’s CEO, Melker Jernberg Fuel in the construction sites, whose trucks are filled with these excavators. Volvo CE aims to 35% of completely electric sales by 2030 and hopes to achieve clean greenhouse gas emissions throughout its value chain for 2040, the goals that Jerberg admitted to the market moving too slowly to make the manufacturer achieved.

“The transformation is, unfortunately, slower than expected, slower than necessary, slower than he wanted,” he said. “We have decided that we have to continue now to lead the way we make sustainable solutions for transport, for construction, for infrastructure. To do it, we need different technological solutions.”

Jernberg and other Volvo executives said that the company will invest a lot in hydrogen fuel technology and even in network in internal combustion engines that customers are not willing to continue and continue with all electricity equipment investments. He said that the internal combustion engine will continue to play an extremely important role in the construction industry and that Volvo will continue to invest.

“Electric battery will be the main way for the Volvo trucks to reach the net zero,” he said. “The Volvo group was very soon with electricity. We start with buses. We now have a complete range of electric trucks available to all customers around the world and a complete program of electric construction machines.”

The company said that Volvo’s electric road trucks have traveled 99.4 million miles worldwide. The A30 presented in Bauma has five lithium ion batteries embedded in its frontal cabin compartments that can be charged by generators or storage units on the site. Volvo said that the A30 could work four to five hours with a load doing most of the construction tasks, but they granted that the execution time can fall into heavy construction tasks, such as moving a lot of rock at high rates of speed on road construction projects. Less demanding tasks such as going down, those that allow Volvo’s energy saving technology to take care of, they could see a load up to seven hours, they said. Jernberg said Volvo CE lithium ion batteries can be charged from 20% to 80% in about an hour, said Jernberg. Operators can check the loading status, machine hours and energy consumption by means of the My Volvo CE equipment app on the site or remotely.

The company estimates that 84% carbon dioxide reductions for the electric A30 and 90% for the A40 for the two major life trucks after they were released in 2026 compared to their diesel versions.

Case in Zquip

The construction of cases also focused much of its Bauma energy on its range of electrical equipment. The company introduced the CX210ZQ, a complete electric excavator developed with MoOG electric battery technology, including a Modular ZQUIP battery system that allows rapid exchanges of batteries with lithium ion batteries that can be hit on the slots at the rear of the excavator.

“Innovation is our foundation,” said Fabrizio Cepollina, Vice President of the CE case for the Emea region and global alliances. “It is rooted in our DNA. Since 1842, innovation has been our driving force, ensuring our continuous vitality. In case, innovation means providing solutions, products and practical services, which are impacting, which directly improves our customers’ business.”

Collaboration with MOOG in its ZQUIP after -sales battery system extends beyond CX210ZQ, as MOOG provides electrical actuators and other systems to achieve a complete electrical operation of case machines. Moog has a similar association with Bobcat. Collaborations with OEM also involve guidance and automation of machines beyond basic electrification.

Zquipped for construction

At his own stand, Moog showed his new generation of completely electrical equipment, including Bobcat and Case machines and even a Volvo loader converted to the Sensor Teratech and the technology of energy load management. The previous generation of complete MoOG conversions to electricity was achieved by replacing battery packets in the engine compartment of a loader, excavator or skid, with a series of large wire connections and glycol hoses for refrigerant battery packages to actuators, cabin controls and refrigerant reserves.

The new generation of Moog batteries, presented to Bauma, connects in a simple closet to distribute electricity and refrigerant. Batteries include individual packages and can be changed inside or outside the closet in the same way as toning cartridges of a printer. A connection to the back distributes the continuous current power to the machine. Cabinets house at least five of the individual batteries and can feed a load, a small excavator, or a Skid directed up to eight hours.

Volvo Terratecch Loader Moog showed integrated sensors to record everything, from energy consumed to rock.

“Since all these electrical engines and cylinders and actuators have sensors, you can know at any time about the space where this bucket is located,” said Bill Perry, a Moog spokesman. “You can also use the automatic load function to find out how many pounds or kilograms of stone you have in the bucket and shake it and weigh it until it reaches the right weight.”
