What to know about Enbridge’s Line 5 investigation
Two fires in three days
Fires were reported Sept. 14 at Enbridge’s Great Lakes office in Superior, Wis., and Sept. 17 at a Line 5 construction site in Ashland County, where an equipment trailer and two drilling rigs burned.
The FBI is leading the investigation
The FBI is investigating the cause of both fires with local, state and federal partners. ATF is helping to determine its origin and cause. Graffiti was found in the upper office.
Wisconsin diversion of $1 billion
The construction site fire occurred along Enbridge’s 41-mile Line 5 around the Bad River Reservation, where the company is building a new pipeline segment in northern Wisconsin.
Forced closure due to August accident
Line 5 was shut down after a construction accident in August near Saxon damaged a bypass valve and caused a major release. Enbridge completed a bypass and returned the pipeline to service on September 15.
The tribal-land dispute continues
Enbridge continues to operate a disputed 12-mile section of Line 5 through Bad River Band reservation land while litigation over the removal of that segment continues.
