Irish engineering services company Obelisk has bought Balfour Beatty’s telecoms division.
Obelisk will retain Balfour Beatty’s current team of employees and partners and acquire a new UK headquarters in Southampton. The team will provide turnkey infrastructure services and solutions for customers in the UK and Irish telecommunications and energy sectors.
The move, which follows the acquisition of Obelisk by Constructel Visabeira in 2022, underpins the company’s plans to expand its service offering, technical capacity and scope for innovation in fixed, mobile and energy services.
Balfour Beatty has not commented on the sale and neither party has disclosed the value of the deal.
Obelisk chief executive Ronnie Delaney said: “We are delighted to welcome the Balfour Beatty telecoms team, who together have consistently delivered in this sector for clients such as EE, Cellnex, Cornerstone and Vodafone” .
According to Delaney, the telecoms team, led by COO Philip Fensom, will bring “knowledge, experience and like-minded values to further enhance Obelisk as the partner of choice in delivering innovative and quality telecom infrastructure solutions sustainable and safe way”.
He added: “Obelisk will continue to accelerate new growth opportunities in these sectors, beyond the connection to invest in and expand our skilled workforce in the UK and Ireland, and provide more comprehensive solutions to our clients in new and existing markets.” .
Fensom said, “I along with my teammates look forward to working with the Obelisk team, continuing to perform successfully and taking on new challenges as the business continues to improve.”
It comes after Obelisk announced last year its acquisition by Constructel Visabeira, a leading company in the global energy and telecommunications network engineering sector and subsidiary of Grupo Visabeira holding company.
The new partnership served as part of Obelisk’s growth strategy and saw the business join Constructel Visabeira alongside other telcos such as MJ Quinn, providing access to new markets such as the UK, France , Germany, Belgium, Portugal, Spain, Italy, Denmark and Sweden. and the USA.
