Dive brief:

  • Vantage Data Centers will invest $2 billion to build one three building data center campus in Stafford County, Virginia, according to an announcement Thursday by Virginia Gov. Glenn Younkin.
  • Crews expect construction on the first building to be completed by the end of 2027, according to the release.
  • The expansion adds to Vantage’s three existing Northern Virginia campuses and will increase its statewide capacity to 782 megawatts.

Diving knowledge:

The announcement is an important development for contractors seeking data center opportunities around Data Center Alley, Northern Virginia’s prominent data center corridor.

The 82-acre site, called VA4, will span about 929,000 square feet and will be built to achieve LEED Silver certification, according to the release. Three-story and two-story facilities will use a closed circuit chilled water system with liquid-to-liquid cooling technology capable of handling 100% of IT workloads, according to the project sheet.

“Fredericksburg provided a significant opportunity for Vantage to serve our customers seeking capacity and access to Data Center Alley resources,” Dana Adams, president of North America for Vantage Data Centers, said in the statement. “The region’s proximity to major metros, access to robust infrastructure and growing technology ecosystem make it an ideal location to meet growing demand.”

Data centers are shoring up construction delays and driving a wave of large-scale construction planning activity. In September, almost one in five contractors reported he was under contract for a data center job, according to Associated Builders and Contractors.
