The hazard profile of this project was substantial, with five bridge structures, 2.5 million cubic yards of excavation, 10,000 linear feet of steel pipe assembly, and asphalt paving. The scope included 3.2 miles of four-lane divided roadway, five bridge structures, and 14 mechanically stabilized earth retaining walls. In 419,751 worker hours, the project achieved a TRIR of 0.95 with zero lost time incidents. An HSE professional was on site throughout construction and weekly toolbox talks engaged the team, discussing relevant safety issues and sharing project-specific information.
One of the major safety innovations was the use of a Tri Rex fall protection system for the MSE wall installation, which provided a reliable and mobile form of fall protection at the point of installation, eliminating the need for a loader to constantly reposition a barrier wall after placing each layer piece. The result was improved worker safety, reduced equipment costs and increased production.
The $103 million project was delivered at $91.9 million, 509 days ahead of schedule. The completed corridor provides a direct, limited-access connection to the Tampa metropolitan area while supporting future growth.
