A 52-year-old man killed with a backhoe in the village of Kuha

Ahmedabad: Two men killed a 52-year-old farmer by running over him with a backhoe at Kuha village, about 10 km from Ahmedabad, when he and his family tried to stop them from digging up soil from their farm on Thursday in the evening. The victim, Kanti Thakor, 52, was cultivating a field next to a piece of gauchar (village commons) land in Kuha. On Thursday evening, the women of the family went to the field to collect firewood and saw some men digging earth, which they informed the men. Kanti with his brothers and cousins—Chanduji, Somaji, Shailesh, Jignesh, Galaji, Jashu, Vinu and Ramesh—arrived at the field around 8 p.m., where two men with a backhoe were filling three trucks with excavated soil. When Kanti told them to stop, the operator of the backhoe and the man in it said they would kill them all. They then raised the front loader and hit Kanti on the head with it. When he fell, they ran over him with the backhoe, the wheels going through his hands and legs. They then drove the backhoe towards Kanti’s brothers, who ran for their lives. Kanti’s brother Shailesh was hit with the rear bucket and also sustained injuries. The men then drove the backhoe to Bhavda village, abandoned it and fled in an SUV, according to the FIR lodged at Kanbha police station. Kanti and Shailesh were taken to Singarva Primary Health Center where Kanti was declared ‘brought dead’ and Shailesh’s injuries were treated. Inspector Jayesh Kalotra of Kanbha police said the accused had also dug up soil from the farm on Wednesday. “We informed the mines and minerals department and their team visited the spot. The accused are absconding and we have taken the backhoe,” said Kalotra. Kanbha police have registered a case of murder.

Mumbai: 35-year-old garment trader killed in hit-and-run case in Wadala
