How does the largest US state transport agency plan to use artificial intelligence? When the Texas Department of Transport announced in December a three -year strategic plan to implement artificial intelligence throughout the agency, it had identified 230 cases of potential use.

Alas “can fundamentally revolutionize what we do and create this transformation in the transport industry,” said Anh Selissen, director of information on the department, in a webinar on June 2 on his plan organized by the Eno Center for Transport.

Plan 2025-2027 establishes a roadmap for the department to integrate advanced analytics and smart systems into its operation and transport system.

Among the possible uses of the AI, the department sees technology as a way to prioritize infrastructure projects, manage budgets and contracts and avoid conflicts with public services when planning the project locations. The AI could also provide emergency decision support, such as through time supervision, identify the best evacuation routes and alert and respond to road incidents and wrong drivers.

The Department also plans a role for the AI in the formation of labor force and management of its fleet of vehicles. “Our next step [in the process] It will provide a large amount of traffic data, so we can really do some analytics of IA stronger around traffic information and congestion of an experience of interest, “said Selissen.

To date, the department uses AI in 22 aspects of its work, said Darran Anderson, director of strategy and innovation in the department, including for real -time and predictive traffic data analysis and accident detection. He said that AI on the department’s road network network is reducing the response time to the incident for emergencies or road assistance.

Selissen said that the department sees “millions of attacks” daily in its computer systems, which makes cybersecurity essential for any implementation of the AI. “If a computer pirate enters this system and basically permeates your network, it will be a world of injured for your organization,” he said. The department’s strategy, as in its three -year plan, includes educating risks and ensuring that AI systems are designed, proven and deployed in a way to guarantee security.

Department guidelines include privacy protections along with checks and balances to ensure that the results are impartial and provide equity to all users. Selissen said about AI: “You have to learn it. You have to discover its capacity for use and you have to understand the limits of what this use should be.” He recommended trying pilot programs and starting with small tasks.
