The amount of weight that is considered a heavy haul will depend largely on the state, but generally, it is defined as anything over 80,000 pounds. in gross weight Heavy haulage companies regularly transport items ranging from 80,000 lbs. up to 200,000 pounds. Any weight over 200,000 lbs. it is classified as overload.

Carrying capacity depends on a number of factors including axle configuration and trailer type. Depending on the load, the HGV may require special signage, lighting, permits and 1 or more escort vehicles. The truck can only travel during certain hours of the day; there may also be restrictions on the days they can travel.

The Department of Transportation (DOT) calculates cargo weights based on multiple variables, and they can vary greatly by state. These calculations are based on factors including axle spacing, axle groups, number of tires and manufacturer rating.

No uniformity

All states must allow trucks up to 80,000 lbs. traverses the federal interstate highway system. However, cargo weight limits can be complicated and confusing, depending on the state. Some states allow heavier loads without requiring special permits. Axle weight may also vary by state. Heavy haulers should be aware of the rules of the states they will be crossing.

Road damage

The main reason the DOT promulgated the load limits is to prevent road damage. Interstate highways regularly bear the brunt of heavy haulers. However, most roads are not built to support that much weight without suffering some damage.

security

Another reason why the regulations have been established is for the safety of other motorists. Heavy haulers need extra space to accelerate, stop, turn and maneuver through traffic. A collision or accident with any tractor-trailer equipment is likely to be fatal.
