Guided by a commitment to sustainability, the work of ZGF Architects has had a significant impact on the Midatlantic region in recent years.
This year, ZGF will reveal phase 1 of the 750,000 -square -meter bridge district in Washington, DC, which aims to be the largest zero zero carbon carbon building in the world. This project follows the success of the project of Phase 1 of the HQ2 project of Amazon in Arlington, Va., Which created 2.1 million square meters of offices, retail and public space and is the largest Leed Platinum V4 building in the world.

What drives ZGF’s growth of the Midatlantic?
We have been very lucky to gain really important work and that work is sometimes related to long -term collaborations with people from all over the country. If you think of HQ2, our relationship with Amazon really started in Seattle. At that time, the economy was excellent and we were able to stay consistent with the market, with a part of the DC development that we were very successful in creating design, adapting and building relationships with some of our locally construction partners. This did a design design work that gave us an incredible experience in sophisticated laboratory spaces. Among the high -tech office space, science and technology do quite well and the relationships we worked on to foster our construction partners, which led to additional success at universities, and transferred part of the experience we had of the West Coast. Therefore, it is to take advantage of the work we do throughout the signature and bring it to the Midatlantic.
What impact has your experience on sustainability on this regional growth?
We focus on sustainability that was not so strong in the Midatlantic ten years ago. This story of sustainability, knowing how to do it and the commitment to do it, seems to have resonated with many of our customers and has been one of the reasons we have achieved [Bridge District] Project. [The developer] I knew we could design differently than some of the other typical designers. What I like about the Amazon project is that we have received a 25% reduction in carbon. When we arrived in the bridge district, we were able to obtain a 37% reduced carbon. So we based on the strength of what we had done.

Phase 1 of the Amazon Social Quarter established 2.1 million square meters of offices, in detail and in the public park of 6.2 hectares and is the largest Leed Platinum V4 building built in the world. An underused green area was transformed into a park of 2 hectares for the neighborhood. Protected bicycle lanes and intersections will be the first in Arlington County. The project will have 100% renewable energy consumption for 2030, with buildings powered by 100% renewable energy out of place, and will include strategies in the site to reduce energy and water use.

Phase 1 of the bridge district will serve as an angular stone of future development. The mixed building building will provide 750,000 square meters of market and affordable homes and 42,000 square meters of retail out of the community 8. Located on land before not developed at the foot of the Frederick Douglass bridge, the bridge district will connect the established district of the Riverfront River with communities south and the east of the Anacostia river. The holistic design of the bridge district emphasizes sustainability and decarbonization. With a focus focused on the reduction of carbon both operating and incarnated, the project is on the way to the future largest zero carbon multifamily residential building in the world and the first in the DC region.

At the moment, we are seeing some of the traditional roads or strengths that we bring in the current climate. With our attention to science and technology facilities, which are often built by universities, which is certainly in a slightly different place than it was. So we see it a little. The high -tech office space is really noticeably active at the moment, so it is filling a little. I see a plateau of our activity instead of growth because some markets are a bit more challenged in the current political climate and others are [active].
How does ZGF work to connect with the region’s communities?
Each ZGF office wants to participate in its community. This is how we can become great members of our community. In Washington, DC, for example, we have worked with the Central Kitchen DC for several years to find a new house. Then we were very pleased to be able to support the improvement of their new home. We have a MS Bike Ride team. It is something we started in Seattle and we have done it for 10 or 15 years. We raised more than half a million dollars per [multiple sclerosis research] Through the firm, but we have a local walk here in which we participate. We do not invite not only family and friends of ZGF, but also customers, contracting partners and engineering support people. It is an opportunity to get to know all our players in our projects in a different way and scale. We love to do this.
How do you recruit talent in the region?
We are always looking for and we would always make strategic hires for the right talent. We always look for emerging talent, so we have a robust summer internment program and various commitments, whether HBCUS or the University of Cincinnati. They have a great program. We do this actively and we will not stop doing these things because this is the pipeline for the future.
