Turner Construction Co. On May 6 Launched XPL Offite, a total property subsidiary that takes advantage of the design for manufacturing and assembly techniques (DFMA) to develop construction products and allow projects to be delivered through out -of -site manufacturing capabilities (OSM).
XPL Offite is based on the more than 20 years of application of the real world in manufacturing, prefabrication and modular construction of the company, according to the company. Turner has completed 500 projects worth $ 100 million to more than $ 1 billion.
The Turner Hypersal Data Centers program widely used DFMA capabilities led by executives now running XPL out of place. Their past efforts include delivering 13 standardized prefabricated products to 23 data center campuses in all United States. Manufactured products include transport modules, electric skates and bombs. XPL manages four sellers and collaborates with several general contractors in this $ 400 million program to standardize costs while improving coherence and quality in the field.
Enr previously reported about the prefabrication methods used in the expansion of Terminal 3 of San Francisco International Airport. Turner is part of a design creation team that created prefabricated modules to create temporary passenger corridors as part of a $ 2.6 billion project. A western runner of 1,000 feet and a corridor of 400 feet from the East were made as 11 modules in an air load courtyard and transported through the airport overnight, which accelerated the project calendar.
For the Panasonic Energy Vehicle Vehicles Battery Manufacturing plant, XPL Offore integrated a 2,200-line-FT-MAIN-MAIN-MINE-AFT steel factory, which incorporates all electricity pipes and services, for a ion lithium battery factory of 5.5 million FT-FT-FT-around around. Out -of -place construction of the main components addressed the challenges of work availability and completed the areas of work that were on the critical path of the project in a controlled environment that exceeded the site and the programming restrictions.
“Customers ask for accelerated deliveries. They ask us to build in more remote places. They ask us to build mega projects that require a significant amount of labor, a significant experience and there are significant complexities for these projects,” says Drew Kerr, Turner Vice President and CEO of the new Off -wite Division. “We are asked to find out how to do it.”
Part of Turner’s investment in XPL Offisite is an expansion of an existing manufacturing facility in Decatur, Ala., With equipment such as Lincoln Python technology for reducing steel materials; ABB robotics for the set of precision and Fabstation beams for optimized manufacturing processes.
“Our previous manufacturing facility was only between 15,000 and 20,000 square meters. There was only so much capacity,” says Kerr. “With this expansion, this launch of XPL out of place, we made an investment to expand us … acquire and invest in some additional teams to support a higher capacity and a higher opportunity.”
Kerr said that XPL Offite services will include tailor -made planning; Integrated experience that combines prefabrication, manufacturing management and Turner project management capabilities for complex projects and environments; versatile and customizable products of pieces that cover large construction disciplines, including central utility plants; Skids and MEP racks; Modular bathing pods, clean rooms and computer cabinets.
