Many readers are aware of the many events that ENR and its publisher, BNP Media, produce each year.
For ENR Events Director Andrea Pinyan, it’s that time of year again when her schedule is very busy. That’s because he’s leading planning efforts for ENR’s 12 upcoming best-in-class regional events, as well as its three infrastructure forums to be held in New York. Seattle and Los Angeles, which will take place between September 14 and December 15.
Those 15 events should show a collective attendance of about 2,800 people, he says. Pinyan, whose father, Charles Pinyan, worked at ENR for more than 30 years, recently spoke with ENR Managing Editor Scott Judy about what goes into organizing these key industry events each year.
▶ ENR: How do the Regional Best Projects events align with ENR’s overall mission?
▶ Pineapple: ENR’s mission is to report cutting-edge news about cutting-edge innovations and industry leaders, bring that information to everyone in construction, and help the industry advance its practices. [This is reflected in the events, and] we’ve added safety and sustainability awards to these programs, recognizing two key elements that are a crucial part of every project being built today.
▶ ENR: You’ve easily managed over 100 events from regional awards to best projects to date. What aspects of these events do you particularly value?
▶Pineapple: Unlike traditional programs, Best Projects uniquely honors the entire project team rather than focusing on just one architect or general contractor. All contributors play a vital role, including owners, engineers and subcontractors who perform specialist work such as single assembly, complex bridge construction or complex restoration projects. By recognizing all the moving parts that go into reference structures, the awards show how each partner contributes to the overall success of a project. In addition, companies and projects get recognition, but it also helps ENR. There are regional companies of the year and ENR Newsmakers who have been recognized for the information provided through the presentations of the best projects.

▶ ENR: In terms of ENR’s city-focused Infrastructure Forums, what’s on the horizon for these events?
▶ Pineapple: The Infrastructure Forum series has grown. ENR is looking at one or two more markets that would be suitable to expand this series, depending on where there seems to be a need and where we can get good participation from public bodies.
