A central London construction site has been temporarily closed following a fatal crash involving a lorry belonging to a Keltbray subcontractor.
The cyclist, believed to be a man in his 20s, died at the scene following the incident in Fitzroy Street, Fitzrovia, at around 7.30am on Wednesday.
An eyewitness he told the BBC that they had seen “a young man with an electric bicycle next to a large truck”. The Met Police said no arrests had been made, the BBC reported.
The events took place near a place known as W1 network (CGI pictured), where Derwent is developing a 137,000 sq ft speculative office and retail scheme. Surrey demolition specialist Keltbray is working on the project.
Vince Corrigan, Keltbray’s chief operating officer, said: “Keltbray is aware that on Wednesday 24th May a road traffic accident occurred on a public road near the site of Keltbray’s Network Building project in central London , involving one of its subcontractors’ trucks and a bicyclist, in which the bicyclist tragically suffered fatal injuries.
“The thoughts of Keltbray’s leadership team and all the staff in Keltbray’s built environment division are with the family and friends of all involved at this very difficult time.”
He added: “Keltbray is supporting the police, emergency services and our subcontractor in their investigations as required. While inquiries are ongoing, it would be inappropriate to comment further.”
In a statement, Derwent said: “We were deeply saddened to learn of the fatal road traffic accident in Fitzrovia on Wednesday. Our condolences and sympathies go out to the family and friends of the person. A full investigation is ongoing and we are contact with all parties, including Camden Council.”
Construction work on the site began last June and is expected to be completed in the second half of 2025, according to Derwent’s website.
