The historical structures of the city. Its stratified stone facade and seven -story red brick and the entrance to the rounded corner, similar to the turret, shares design elements with the other historical structures of Boise, in particular the next building IDANHA of the time of 1901. The new Boutique and Idanha Hotel also share the same design company, CSHQA, 136, with its headquarters.
The company was founded in 1889 by the Scottish immigrant WS Campbell, who was the designer of Idanha Hotel. As the firm grew and added members, they designed many other reference buildings in the GEM state and the whole region.
The name of the firm changed with successive collaborations and was known as Cline, Smull, Hamill, Quintieri Associates in 1985 when the change was made to CSHQA. Currently, CSHQA is a diversified complete service design company that offers architectural design, engineering, interior design, historical preservation and landscape architecture with 117 employees in their offices in Boise, Sacramento, Dallas and Denver.
CSHQA is one of the companies that have been in the Boise Chamber of Commerce for more than 100 years. His work, which is displayed in the capital, includes projects at the Boise Airport, the renovation of the Grove Plaza, the pedestrian of two commercial blocks in the central city and the new Trefort music hall.
In 2018, CSHQA went to a 100% owned company. The design firm recorded revenue of $ 24 million by 2024, with just over $ 18 million from projects in the region of seven states larger. The income reported by 2023 was $ 17 million, with $ 10 million in projects in the Interouuntain area of Idaho, Utah and Montana.
Enr asked CSHQA Architect and director Mark Gier about the evolution of the design firm in Boise and beyond. A 30 -year veteran of the firm, Gier, is currently acting as a temporary Chief Executive Officer. The following is a edited and condensed transcription of the Q&A.
CSHQA COPE PROJECS
The Sparrow Hotel
CSHQA renewed a motor lodge of the sixties in the center of Boise, turning it into a new hotel. The hotel was designed to capture the charm of the Center of Boise while highlighting the unique qualities of Treasure Valley. The outside was completely refreshed with paint and finishes and has an outdoor fireplace located in an outdoor courtyard.
International Fresno Yosemite Airport
For this terminal expansion, the design team focused on incorporating materials and a colored palette inspired by the amazing landscape of Yosemite National Park and the surrounding rivers and fields. The design design project with the construction of Q&D occurred in the spring of 2023 and is expected to be complete this fall.

CSHQA maintains a unique position in Boise development. How do you continue to involve the firm with the growth of the city?
Staff members at all levels participate in the community and have a good understanding of Boise’s past and future career. We have a strong relationship with the Boise Planning Department and our employees regularly discuss close projects and trends with them. We see that the value of the youngest staff is involved and meets with the city’s staff, and we encourage staff to relate to the city during the rewriting of the city’s permission process. One of our main is the chairman of the city design review committee and shares updates to the processes with the other teams.
In addition to the ESOP, how does CSHQA continue to evolve as it grows?
We have a renewed approach to finding efficiency in our processes and procedures. If team members are available, we are working on returning to our details library, reviewing our graphic standards manual and streamlining our revit/BIM practices. The companies that can find these efficiencies and allow their teams to be fully productive during the week, will see more satisfied employees and solid construction documents.
We want to look at our sustainability efforts and raise an internal champion to communicate the importance of our customers. In addition, at the beginning of the year, we have created a new role for the design director to take advantage of our existing talent and to consider the bar for attentive design.
What are some of the opportunities for the horizon for your size design companies in the mountain states?
The biggest impact right now is uncertainty, so customers may be pressing the pause to wait and see what can happen with rates or interest rates. This creates an opportunity to educate potential customers in the process and inform them that construction costs probably will not be reduced to the [near] Future.
Various companies with public and private sectors will have an advantage. In addition, our internal engineering capabilities allow us to offer assistance in deferred maintenance projects, which allows us to continue to serve our customers, even if there are no new projects in the near future.
In the short term, public work is still strong. But companies can see that the federal money is limited and the projects that depend on the federal subsidies will see a reduction at least in the coming years. There is still a significant shortage of affordable multi -family homes in the United States, and this is true in this region. We will see a strong funding for housing projects and, regardless of politics and rates, we hope that the projects will advance to cover the need. Meanwhile, market rates can continue to be plains because it has been built so much in recent years.
