The winners of the Construction News Awards 2023 have been announced at a dazzling ceremony in central London.
Veteran broadcaster Claudia Winkleman hosted events in the glitzy ballroom of Mayfair’s Grosvenor House Hotel on Thursday evening (July 13), where more than 1,200 clients, contractors and suppliers celebrated outstanding work in the construction sector.
Teams and projects big and small from across the UK were recognized as 23 awards were presented in different categories. The ceremony was the culmination of the work of more than 100 judges, including renowned directors from across the industry, who whittled down more than 400 entries.
Mace won Contractor of the Year (turnover over £500m) for the fourth year running, with judges praising the company’s “dedication to innovation” and training, noting that it had achieved its goal of winning a project a week by 2022. while its revenue topped £2 billion.
Mace also won Best Project (over £50m), with client Battersea Power Station Development Company, for the redevelopment of the Grade II* landmark into a mixed-use destination with 254 flats, a six-acre park and ample office and commercial space.
Reds10 was named Contractor of the Year (turnover under £500m), with judges praising the vertically integrated offsite construction specialist for “leading the way towards delivering a wider set of social outcomes “.
Specialist Contractor of the Year was Merit, with judges praising the manufacturing and offsite specialist for “significant carbon and waste reduction and proven results in time and cost savings”.
Morgan Sindall was, apart from Mace, the only contractor to receive multiple awards: Community Engagement Project of the Year for St Marks Church of England School and Best Use of Technology, with Spillard and Flannery Plant Hire.
Meanwhile, the Construction Leader of the Year award was given to Tej Bahia, business director of highways consulting at Arcadis, who was recognized for his “focus on learning and self-development and its committed commitment to the work culture in inclusion and diversity”.
