For the second time in two weeks, debris fell on a road near the George Washington Bridge in Manhattan, this time during the morning commute on May 13, hitting a vehicle and sending its passenger to the hospital, according to the New York City Fire Department.
All westbound lanes on the lower level of the New Jersey-bound bridge were closed after debris fell from the roof of a short tunnel on the section over one westbound lane of the Trans Manhattan Expressway that connects the Cross Bronx Expressway to the bridge, New Jersey Gov. Mikie Sherill announced on X.
“The Port Authority is investigating the incident and will make the necessary repairs immediately,” he wrote.
The westbound lanes of the lower level bridge remained closed during the evening commute.
The latest incident, located near 179th Street and Wadsworth Avenue, comes a week after a large piece of debris fell from the roof of a tunnel on the Trans-Manhattan Freeway near the entrance to the upper level of the bridge. Those wrecks narrowly missed John Toledo’s car, a employee of the Environmental Protection Department who recorded the incident on his dash cam and posted the footage on Reddit, writing that he’s “lucky to be alive.”
Port Authority of New York and New Jersey officials later said the debris that fell near Toledo’s car consisted mostly of dust and lightweight materials. After inspecting the roof panels, the Port Authority said the problem was resolved.
