Dive brief:

  • The C Extension of the hall at Seattle-Tacoma International Airport has been approved with a budget of $399 million, the Port of Seattle announced last week. The project will not use taxpayer money; instead, a combination of federal airport development funds and future revenue bonds will support construction, according to the Port.
  • The project will add four floors to the existing three-storey facility when major works begin in the first quarter of 2024. Building taller to develop services and tenant spaces is a key part of the growth strategy of Sea-Tac, as it is one of the airports with the most restricted space in North America, according to the Port.
  • New York City-based Turner Construction is the project’s general contractor, and Seattle-based Miller Hull and Australia-based Woods Bagot are the architects. The expansion is part of the Port’s five-year plan, $5.3 billion capital plan.

Diving knowledge:

A new floor will contain office space, while the other three will host services such as restaurants, retail, lounges, outdoor viewing areas, rooms for interfaith prayer and meditation, and a performance area for live music. The expansion will also include a high performance air supply system to improve indoor air quality.

The Port also released a new video featuring interior and exterior animations of the completed project.

The project is the first of Sea-Tac to integrate the Port Sustainable Evaluation Framework to ensure that the project supports the Port’s goal of being the greenest and most energy efficient port in North America.

The project includes a variety of green features, including a solar photovoltaic array on the roof, and will utilize materials with low embodied carbon. Biophilic design elements, such as corrugated Douglas fir panels, will be connect travelers with nature and are designed to celebrate the forests and landscapes of the Pacific Northwest.

The Port estimates that the C Concourse project will be substantially completed by 2026.
