Award: Second phase, Renovation of the Rogers Center
Value: $C$300 million ($220 million) for a complete renovation
Location: Toronto, Ontario
Customer: Rogers Stadium Limited Company

Edmonton, Alberta-based PCL won the $220 million second phase Rogers Center multi-year renovation project, home of baseball’s Toronto Blue Jays. Work began in October and will continue until April 2024, the contractor announced on November 21.

As part of the renovations, the contractor will overhaul the bowl and the 100-level foul pole-to-foul pole seating structure, with seats facing the infield.

Rogers Centre, originally conceived as a multi-purpose stadium, opened in 1989. The complex has never undergone a major renovation, according to the release. Once completed, the seat bowl will have new sections, improved sight lines with less obstruction and wider seats with more leg room, armrests and cup holders.

The ballpark will also feature three new clubs: the Batting Tunnel Club, located behind the man’s third base side; the Home Plate Club, located directly behind the plate; and The Lounge, located behind home plate next to first base.

So far, PCL has carried out the structural demolition of the lower cup, which took place from October 13 to 26, according to the release. The contractor removed and recycled 29.5 million pounds of materials, including 26.5 million pounds of concrete and 3 million pounds of steel.

PCL has also completed field-level excavation, which took place from October 23 to November 6, to create underground space for new player facilities and premium clubs. The contractor removed 780 truckloads of material from the stadium and carried 530 loads. Work has been accelerated, so builders began formwork and poured the first new concrete on the same day demolition was completed on October 26. Crews lifted the first steel column on November 13.

“Following the complex and rapid renovation completed in just six months for the 2023 season, the second phase of the project will deliver an even greater volume of work in the same time frame as the 100-level bowl is demolished and rebuild to provide Blue Jays fans with an experience designed specifically for baseball,” said Monique Buckberger, vice president and district manager of PCL’s Toronto office.

PCL also worked on the first phase of the stadium renovation, which was substantially completed on March 31. The park debuted to the public on April 11, the franchise’s 2023 home opener.
