Hall Contracting’s backhoe dredger Woomera joins a number of tugs to ceremonially mark the last bucket of material dredged as part of the Townsville Harbor Channel Improvement Project.

Since capital dredging began in early 2022, Hall’s team has removed 3.4 million cubic meters of material from Platypus Channel and the adjacent Sea Channel.
The works are planned to allow access to the port for commercial, defense and cruise ships up to 300 meters in length.
“Although Woomera will be sailing from Townsville shortly, Hall hopes to maintain her presence in the region, with our crew continuing to build back sweep protection for the existing Channel Upgrade project rock wall.”, the company said.
The $1.6 billion Port Expansion Project (PEP) is a long-term development plan for the port.
It includes capital dredging for channel widening, land reclamation to develop a new outer port, wharves and associated infrastructure.
