The United States Energy Loan Program Office will continue to support nuclear projects, Energy Secretary Christopher Wright said on June 10, while testifying in front of a House Sub -Committee on its proposed budget. But other types of projects that have received support from offices such as the manufacture of wind, solar and electric related to the vehicle may be on its own.
The office provides loans and loan guarantees that support innovative energy projects that can fight to find traditional sources funding. Its programs can increase energy projects through new technology, those that deploy clean energy and those that manufacture efficient fuel vehicles, energy projects of tribes and shared infrastructure to transport captured carbon dioxide.
The White House budget application for the Department of Energy totalizes $ 46.3 billion, which would mark a reduction of $ 3.5 billion, or just over 7%, from the current level promulgated. The proposal includes $ 750 million in credit subsidies for the loan office to support the development and deployment of commercial nuclear technologies, said Wright. But it also includes cuts to other programs, show the records.
“It deeply refers to how many billions of dollars were removed through the door without proper diligence in the last days of Biden’s administration,” Wright said during the House Commission on the view of the Energy and Energy Sub -Committee.
The Budget Reconciliation Bill of Republicans of the House would terminate the financing of the Office of Failless Loans that had been established in the Act of Reduction of Inflation. The law of 2022 established billions of dollars for various programs related to energy.
When asked about the cuts, Wright said he considers the action “a useful tool for launching nuclear energy.”
Wright also appointed nuclear as a continued focus for the national laboratories of the energy department, along with advances in computer science and artificial intelligence.
“Our nuclear innovation as a nation began with the Manhattan project, and the next Manhattan project is clearly and,” said Wright. “DOE plays an important role in promoting the IA for scientific discovery and national security.”
Wright said the department is reviewing its financial assistance and presented its recent announcement that canceled 24 $ 3.7 billion awards for various carbon capture projects and other decarbonization projects.
“These projects did not comply with the economic, national security or energy security standards needed to sustain DOE investment and taxpayers should not be forced to subsidize them,” he said.
Some legislators grilled on the changes in the department’s priorities and how it will affect projects.
Representative Kathy Castor (D-FLA.), A member of the Sub-Committee, said that without the assistance of LPO, the owners of projects that were based on it because they cannot obtain traditional funding will move away. He emphasized two canceled projects that had received LPO offers, the Kore Power Inc. battery plant. of $ 1.25 million in Buckeye, Ariz. And ASPEN AMPOGELS INC., the EV Battery Components plant of $ 325 million in Statusboro, Ga.
“This dysfunction in the Energy Department is killing investments in America,” Castor said.
He also raised concern about the department’s focus on “dirty energy sources”. Wright said the administration is committed to using coal, oil and natural gas.
“We will invest DOE resources in sources and technologies that support affordable, reliable and safe energy and will provide investment performance for North -Americans,” he said. “We will return the Department to its main mission and eliminate expense on projects that do not provide this return, not advance our energy needs and will not fail the test of economic viability.”
