Houston-based contractor McDermott International Ltd. has been awarded a front-end engineering design contract by Repsol Exploración México, a unit of Spain-based energy company Repsol, to develop the Polok oil fields and Chinwol in the Gulf of Mexico.
Under the contract, the value of which was not disclosed, McDermott will provide FEED services for the engineering, procurement, construction and installation of subsea components including umbilicals, risers and flowlines.
Polok and Chinwol are located in Block 29 of the Gulf. Repsol will increase its stake in the oil discovery area, agreeing in September to buy all of the 16.67% that had been owned by the Mexican subsidiary of Thailand’s national oil and gas company PTT. Exploration and Production.
The purchase, which would increase Repsol’s operating stake in the development project from 30% to 46.67%, is expected to be completed by the end of the year, PTT said.
The Polok and Chinwol fields were the first deepwater oil discoveries made by Repsol and its partners in Mexico in 2020. The Polok-1 exploration well, drilled at a depth of 2,620 m, found more of 200 m of “pay oil net” in two zones, defined as the thickness of the rock that can produce hydrocarbons economically. The Chinwol-1 well was drilled to 1,850 m, with 150 m of net oil pay found. The fields, separated by 12 km, are located 88 km from the Mexican coast. R
Repsol’s partners are PC Carigali Mexico (28.33%) and Harbor Energy (25%). Mahesh Swaminathan, McDermott’s senior vice president of subsea and floating facilities, said he “looks forward to moving this project forward.”
The contractor also announced energy-related contracts elsewhere, including for a decommissioning and disposal project for the Harriet Alpha oil platform off Australia’s west coast that was awarded in November to Santos, the second developer of country’s energy. It’s McDermott’s biggest to date, Swaminathan said, described as “huge” with a value of up to $250 million.
Project management and engineering will be based in Perth.
McDermott also won an engineering, procurement, construction and installation contract in Qatar for gas infrastructure at the North Field South offshore project, which expansion owner Qatar Energy said will help double production the country’s total LNG to 142 million tons per year from the present. 77.
The scope of the project covers more than 155 miles of offshore and onshore pipelines connecting five new offshore wellhead platforms to two new LNG trains onshore, McDermott announced. The company did not take into account any contractual clauses.
Italian engineer Rina wins CCS job in Malaysia
Engineering firm Rina has won a front-end engineering and design contract from Malaysian energy giant Petronas to work on carbon capture and storage projects in the country’s northern and southern industrial regions.
Rina said it will plan supporting infrastructure including an onshore terminal, dock and pipeline in the north and an onshore terminal, pipeline and offshore platform in the south. “These facilities will be crucial for capturing carbon dioxide emissions from industrial sources and safely storing them in offshore geological formations,” said the company, which did not disclose terms of the contract.
Rina ranks 63rd on ENR’s list of 225 international design companies, with revenues of $163 million in 2023 outside Italy, 55% of the total. Enrico Beccaceci, the company’s senior director, said the contract “strengthens Rina’s strategic partnership with Petronas and marks an important step in our expansion in Southeast Asia.”
Petronas also awarded a pre-FEED work contract to Aker Solutions for two other industrial sites.
