AECOM secured work on a 19-contract program expected to generate $1 billion in engineering services for the expansion of Seattle’s regional transit network.
Sound Transit, Seattle’s public transit agency, selected the Dallas-based company to deliver construction management services through three multiple award task order contracts, according to a February 27 press release. The work will include civil and structural engineering work, including preliminary engineering and full design development. The five-year design contract also includes planning and environmental services, according to AECOM.
“The full scope of our services, spanning design, environmental and project management support, underscores the deep value we provide to our customers,” Matt Crane, AECOM’s US West region executive, said in the statement.
For the construction and project management services contract, AECOM will lead major capital expansion and continuous improvement programs. In terms of environmental services, which cover the planning of new infrastructure and renovation projects, the company will work as a sub-consultant. This includes planning, assessments, investigations and system-wide environmental cleanup activities, according to the release.
AECOM did not disclose the amount of the contracts. Specific dollar amounts for multiple award task order contracts are typically assigned only as individual task orders are issued during the course of work.
Sound Transit has issued 19 multiple award task order contracts for network upgrades. The projects aim to implement new facilities, upgrades and repair work in good condition, and should generate approximately $1 billion in engineering services in the Seattle region, according to the release.
In late December 2025, for example, Sound Transit awarded Parsons, based in Chantilly, Virginia, a position on the $1 billion multiple award task order contracts. Projects support Sound Transit’s Sound Transit Capital Program 3one of the largest transportation infrastructure initiatives in North America, according to a Parsons press release.
However, ST3, a voter-approved plan to expand the transit network, is struggling significant budget deficits. According to the Seattle Times, the total for the program has risen to $185 billion due to cost overruns.
The multiple award task order structure should be reduced Total project costs ST3 about 5%, according to a September 2025 Sound Transit slide deck.
It adds to the infrastructure portfolio
The award is a major win for AECOM’s infrastructure portfolio.
AECOM featured recently transportation and program management work as areas of opportunity this year, according to executive comments on the firm’s most recent earnings call. For example, Gaurav Kapoor, AECOM’s chief financial officer, said he expects demand for these types of program management services to grow.
He also added that state and municipal construction budgets looked much healthier than expected, a strong indicator for local investment as well.
