A $28 million effort revitalized five gates at Phoenix-Mesa Gateway Airport, providing expanded seating capacity, ADA-compliant accommodations, retail space and an outdoor patio, all in 18 months.
With an extension of 30,000 square meters, the modernization of the terminal improves the infrastructure of the airport for its increasing number of annual passengers. With the demolition of the previous terminal scheduled for January 2023, just prior to Super Bowl LVII, implementing an alternate gate facility to handle peak flight volumes was critical to both the project and the ‘increase in tourist traffic at the airport. The project team chose to build a 6,300 square meter three-door prefab structure while the original terminal was just welcoming its final passengers. Once the temporary structure was completed, passengers would be able to walk through an enclosed tunnel to the air-conditioned terminal. After the modernized terminal was completed, the temporary structure was torn down and stored at the airport for use in future expansion projects.
All operations were conducted airside, requiring extensive security measures for employees and business partners, emphasizing both construction and passenger safety.
Security clearance badges, strict visitor policies and gate procedures helped foster a trusting partnership between the airport and construction crews, allowing the project team to complete work on time and under budget in February 2024.
