OWNER: Leica camera

LEADING DESIGN COMPANY: MG2

GENERAL CONTRACTOR: Build group

STRUCTURAL ENGINEERING: Wow!

MEP ENGINEERING: Hargis

The scope of work for this build of a high-end camera store within a luxury shopping development included high-end millwork, finishes and display cases, a customer service lounge and areas back of house employees, all completed in three months.

The original design for the project called for crews to remove the thin tile and place polished concrete for the finished floor. But the demolition uncovered an existing 1.5-in. mortar bed below the tile which would have created an oversized step at the entrance threshold. To solve the problem, the project team chose a microtopping paving system, ideal for situations that require a thin concrete infill with a decorative finish.

Installing a tinted mirror in the store also required extensive planning and coordination. The mirror is 1/8 inch adjusted. reveals, with a horizontal reveal running across the top of a hidden door opening, a window opening and a display case. But given the mirror’s 8-10 week lead time and the project’s fast schedule, the contractor couldn’t wait until the field-scale wall was built. Working closely with the framing subcontractor, the team coordinated three different openings, all with different installation tolerances to ensure precise installation.

Working within such a small space required impeccable coordination between the trades, as many contractors were often working in the same space simultaneously. As crews were sheeting the hardtop roof, the glass subcontractor was installing mirror trim in the rough openings.
