A $46.4 million overhaul has modernized this 88,000-square-foot facility into research labs and classrooms with advanced MEP systems. A new roof and a robust structural steel mechanical duct support system accommodate the updated mechanical and exhaust requirements. To safeguard the existing NanoSIMS lab, an underground facility dedicated to meteorite research, the team built a protective enclosure around the lab, keeping access safe for researchers. The lab houses a highly sensitive laser microscope, an irreplaceable tool that is extremely sensitive to vibration, dust, air temperature and humidity, and the team needed to ensure that its operations could continue for the entire construction.
Completing the renovation while the complex was occupied added complexity. The Bateman complex spans over 1 million square feet and consists of seven wings. Utilities had to continue serving the entire complex while the D and E wings were dismantled and rebuilt.
