Repairs to a sinkhole near a runway at LaGuardia International Airport in Queens, New York, continued May 22 heading into the Memorial Day weekend, delaying flights for the third day in a row.
One of the two runways, said to be 4-22, would remain closed until the morning of May 23, according to media reports. The sinkhole was found along its rim on May 20.
After discovering the sinkhole, crews deployed ground-penetrating radar to identify areas to repair. Engineers continued to examine the track on 22 May.
The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey initially said the airport would return to full capacity on May 22, but later opted to keep it closed for one more day “out of an abundance of caution.”
Authority officials did not say what might have caused the sinkhole, but ABC News cited reports on May 22 that it was possibly due to an “ongoing fuel line project” at the airport, but without further details.
