PCL Construction will soon complete the $149 million 16th Street Mall makeover project in downtown Denver, part of a $937 million spending package to elevate infrastructure throughout the city.
The project began in 2022 and is the first renovation of the 12-block pedestrian mall since it opened in 1982. The work includes removing the footbridge between the two bus lanes to allow for sidewalks wider, improve drainage and add 220 trees.
Crews are also recreating the kilometer-long grid of red, black and gray granite cobblestones, key to the mall’s modernist IM Pei design.
The discovery of underground utilities and an active brick-lined sewer from the 1880s delayed completion, now scheduled for fall 2025.
