The launch of the “first” agenda of the Trump administration had a rocky start, as its large rates ads closed stock market markets worldwide. Although the full field of rates has been stopped since then, the ripples of economic uncertainty have been maintained and have been the design market, according to classified companies with 500 best design companies.
“Given the evolutionary nature of these policies, it is difficult to fully anticipate all the impacts,” says Tim Rock, co-president and general director of Gannett Fleming Transystems. The company is focused on keeping “agile and positioned to respond” to the changing conditions of the market.
With some economists who increase the warnings of the recession, many main companies say that their customers have chosen to make a waiting approach.
“We hope that ‘America First’ can increase the costs for materials that are not easily available by national suppliers,” says Doug Shatto, president and CEO of Lochmueller Group Inc. “This will have a negative impact on our pipeline, as the project costs will warm up, causing the owners to reduce, delay or cancel some projects.”
He adds: “We have already seen this happen to some extent, as the costs of the contractor’s offers have increased in the last three or four years due to high demands and a shortage of workers.”
Behind the numbers
National revenue by 2024 for the most important design companies increased by $ 7.9% to $ 126.1 billion. International income increased by 3.3% to $ 21.7 billion.
Of the 473 companies that have presented both this year and finally, 83.9% recorded an increase in revenue. The 10 main companies accounted for 32.8% of the total design income, slightly dropping from a 34.8% reading in last year’s survey. Median firm’s income amounted to $ 97 million by 2024, 9.4% until 2023. Median revenue for companies that self -identify as architects only showed a stronger growth, 16.6% to $ 68.1 million.
Beyond the number of income, some companies say they have reconfigured their operations to better serve in the sectors where they generate the most business.

“We have made important investments in our customer portal, which provides customers to visual and real -time data at the request of all their projects,” says M. Gayle Packer, President and CEO of Terracon. “We have invested in our drilling fleet with enlarged exploration capabilities and we are taking advantage of our historical data in increasing ways.”
Ardurra has improved its ranking on the list of 500 best with various acquisitions, adding 225 employees last year after the purchase of WK Dickson & Co., a multidisciplinary infrastructure consultancy firm based in Charlotte headquarters, NC
Despite challenges such as market inflation and volatility, “our general workload continues to grow throughout the firm and the recruitment of qualified talent is still a maximum priority,” says Ernesto Aguilar, President and CEO of Ardurra.
However, uncertainty is found, Shawn Basler of Perkins Eastman, co-director general and executive director. “Although uncertainty is not new, the increase in stops and interest rates begin and increased interest rates, along with unpredictable changes within the government, affect our customers and funding for the project,” he says.
Find the right talent
The 500 main design companies overwhelmed the talent of the highest priority. For many companies, this includes the creation of specialized work swimming pools relationships to ensure that projects can have enough staff to move forward.
“Given the crisis of specialized labor resources, finding a qualified and qualified staff is the most significant challenge for us. This resource problem leads to insufficient projects, delays, higher costs in our industry and a negative impact on the profitability of everything that occurs,” says the President and CEO of AI Engineers Inc., Abul Islam.
Generally, the WSB COO Jon Chiglo says that the design market is watching the continuous effects of some education programs that release the careers in STEM.
“Although technology is helping to solve the vacuum, without key experts in progress, projects cannot be evaluated or designed and, without field workers, projects cannot be built,” he says. “We need more planners, earth scientists, engineers and field staff. Technology will be a tool to help our staff, not replace them.”
As priorities change, technology and resources, President and CEO of Norr Brian
Gerstmar says there is a sense of “everything, everywhere, all at once” when it comes to industry challenges.
“We see a combination of three times that affects the AEC industry: the uncertainty of the economy, adopting the technology of AI that is not fully mature and that competes by experienced talent in technology,” says Gerstmar. “The changes occur at an accelerated rate and cause interruptions. We can foresee where everything goes, but companies must be ready to take the next step to respond to the market.”
Solutions Design
For many main companies, the challenges of the ongoing market are also an opportunity to deepen innovative solutions.
“The AEC industry is browsing for a significant period of change, driven by evolutionary priorities related to financing and delivery of infrastructure along with moving progress rapidly in technology and innovation that bring a lot of potential,” says John Barton, a HNTB Corp Senior Vice President.
In the midst of market volatility and uncertainty, the 500 main companies say that close relationships and collaboration with project members are now more important than ever to keep projects underway.
“In response to the uncertainty of prices and availability, Revamp has inclined to adaptable design strategies,” says its president, Tyler Nelson. These include a focus on flexible electrical and mechanical designs that allow various purchase routes. Nelson explains that the company succeeds “using standardized specifications that can accommodate different manufacturers and incorporate design elements, such as environmental buffers, to take into account regulatory conditions.”
Nelson, according to Nelson. “Regular state updates and re -staring customer conversations have helped manage expectations and deadlines in these times of uncertainty,” he adds. “This type of transparency is essential in the AEC industry, where unexpected cost delays or increases can make a quick snowball without planning coordinated.”
In Garver, Jeff Sober, Director of Water Services and Senior Vice President, says the firm considers a larger demand for alternative delivery models.
“We are taking this opportunity to strengthen the relationships of basic contractors and to train more progressive design opportunities,” says Sober. “Collaboration with contractors can allow some flexibility at the time of design decision -making during a project, which can help mitigate part of uncertainty over materials.”
He adds: “Regardless, there is a lot of uncertainty in the market due to the rates, and we will have to be a patient to see how the market is corrected.”
In a large number of executive orders, the Trump administration has receded federal policies that have existed in various past presidential administrations, that is, related to environmental sustainability; Diversity, equity and inclusion; and immigration of the workforce.
Apart from politics, the 500 main companies say that these political changes will have real world consequences for industry capacity to increase flexibility.
In the midst of an immigration repression, “changes in labor policy and immigration can reduce the availability of skilled workers,” says Jim Stamatis, General Director of the Environment. And as the AEC sector rises to meet critical social needs such as infrastructure development, adaptation to climate, environmental management and more resistant water and energy systems, Stamatis assures that “competition for qualified professionals will only intensify.”
