A concrete bridge in southwest China partially collapsed on November 10, following a landslide on one of the approaches. The Hongqi Bridge, which completed construction earlier this year, had been closed to traffic the previous day after cracks and slope deformations were discovered at one end of the bridge. No fatalities or injuries have been reported.

The concrete bridge is located at Shuangjiangkou Dam, also known as Shuangjiangkou Hydroelectric Power Station, near Ma’erkang City, the capital of Aba Tibetan and Qiang Autonomous Prefecture in Sichuan Province. An important link for the region, the 758m bridge carries National Highway 317.

The mountainous region is seismically active, but no earthquake was reported as the cause of the landslide or collapse.

According to local media reports, a landslide at one end of the bridge destroyed the approach and caused about 130m of the bridge to collapse. The bridge has a main span of 220 m, with piers up to 172 m high.

The Hongqi Bridge was built by Sichuan Road and Bridge Group, which is ranked 39th in ENR’s 2025 Global Prime Contractors List and 195th in the 2025 International Prime Contractors List.
