A couple of The Baltimore-based contractors recently started at a new state-of-the-art hospital in Easton, Maryland, according to an Oct. 22 news release.
The $540 million facility, under construction by Whiting-Turner and Mahogany, will replace the current Shore Medical Center on South Washington Street in Easton. The new hospital will serve more than 450,000 residents in Caroline, Dorchester, Kent, Queen Anne’s and Talbot counties.
The project, located on a 230-acre site, aims to advance the quality and accessibility of health care in the region, said Ken Kozel, president and CEO of Coastal Regional Health. University of Maryland, during the commencement ceremony.
Historically, Maryland’s Eastern Shore has been troubled access to comprehensive health care because of its rural nature and geographic isolation from the rest of the state, according to a press release from the University of Maryland, Baltimore. According to the UMB statement, the federal government designates almost the entire eastern coast as a medically underserved area.
“Expanding access to health care across our 2,000-square-mile region, with the goal of providing the ‘right care at the right place at the right time,’ has forced us to think about innovative ways to transform the ‘rural health care,’ Kozel said in the statement. . “We look forward to realizing our vision for our new state-of-the-art Shore Regional Medical Center.”
The six-storey hospital facility will have 122 private inpatient beds, 27 emergency treatment rooms and 25 adult observation beds, along with specialist facilities such as an acute rehabilitation centre, a birth center and a cardiac intervention unit. The complex also includes a 60,000-square-foot ambulatory services building and a heliport to enhance critical care skills.
The Whiting-Turner and Mahogany construction team expects to finish the project in the summer of 2028, according to the release.
