Dive Brief:
- Edmonton, Alberta-based PCL Construction has signed a multi-year enterprise agreement with safety intelligence software company HammerTech to increase jobsite safety and efficiency, according to a joint filing. News release of October 1 of the manufacturer and the software supplier.
- PCL said HammerTech, based in Melbourne, Australia, will provide PCL with agility and adaptability to changing processes; improved reporting and data management; and greater efficiency in gathering and analyzing security documentation, according to the release.
- According to Stephanie Germain, PCL’s strategic communications manager, PCL is scheduled to transition to HammerTech from its current proprietary security software starting next year. The solution will help up to 50,000 daily workers on more than 1,200 PCL projects.
Diving knowledge:
HammerTech’s platform allows builders to check permits, manage jobsite orientations and connect people involved in a project, including general contractors, subcontractors and tradespeople, according to its website.
“As the latest addition to our technology ecosystem, HammerTech will enable us to collect more sophisticated data around our security programs,” said Mark Bryant, PCL’s chief information officer, in the statement. “Strong data helps inform decision-making, improve process and ultimately create a safer workplace for all our workplaces.”
Jim Barry, PCL’s vice president of health, safety and environment, said the technology will help the company move toward its ultimate safety goal, “a ‘zero incident’ future.” He said the company switched to HammerTech because of the large number of benefits it provided.
“As construction projects evolve, we determined that the enhanced reporting and data management system offered by HammerTech would help streamline processes on job sites, create better analysis of safety documentation, and ultimately help at PCL to make data-driven decisions in our pursuit of making sure everyone gets home safely at the end of the day,” Barry told Construction Dive in an email.
The news continues an influx of funding for HammerTech: The company raised a $70 million growth investment from Riverwood Capital on July 15.
PCL has been no stranger to testing innovative solutions in its construction projects. In March, the contractor entered into a separate business agreement with Atlanta-based Document Crunch, an AI-based solution for reviewing construction contracts and identifying critical risks.
On the hardware side, the company also leveraged Broomfield, Colo.-based Vita Industrial’s Load Navigator to stabilize 10,000-pound, 20-foot-long formwork in windy conditions. The construction team said that the Technology helped them work more safelyand days when the wind would otherwise have closed the project during the day.
