HNTB and HDR have partnered to redesign the University of Nebraska’s historic Memorial Stadium. Dubbed the “Big Red Rebuild,” the $600 million plan was approved by the University of Nebraska System Board of Regents in April. HNTB serves as the lead sports design architect and HDR is the architect of record. Kiewit is the general contractor.
Construction is scheduled to begin in March 2027 and be completed by the fall 2028 football season.
The redesign aims to improve access, seating comfort, visibility and amenities. A connected east-west bowl will create a fully continuous main concourse, allowing 360-degree circulation for fans. When completed, the stadium will have a capacity of 80,000 fans. The project also expands the possibility of hosting concerts and other events.
“The design carefully balances preserving its legacy and iconic character with data-driven solutions that enhance convenience, connectivity and programming opportunities,” says Andrew Elmer, HDR director of sports and recreation.

“This project is about preserving the intensity, pride and collective energy that make Nebraska football unmistakable, while creating a comfortable, connected and powerful stadium experience,” says Darren Nielsen, HNTB managing director.
In the spring of 2024, the original project was halted for a comprehensive review of scope, strategy and costs, which identified several areas to be addressed, including $200 million in mandatory deferred maintenance, according to Nebraska Athletics. The project is expected to be financed with $250 million in philanthropic support and $350 million in private bond financing.
